A single mother in a family of five kids, Jones had a difficult and impoverished childhood. Jones' mother moved constantly and stayed for a while in the basement of the church. Jones was the winner of the NCAA Indoor Hurdles contest in the years 2003 as well as 2004. Jones was a professional athlete in 2005 after she completed her bachelor's degree. She started training for a career in track. Jones was the winner of Torino Memorial in 2005, in addition to Ostrava and Heusden tracks events the following year.

Lesley Brandt moved with her entire New Zealand family into Auckland in 1999. After a few years of being employed in the retail industry her promotion was to the position of IT manager consultant.
